10 Excellent Ways To Prepare For Your Separation or Divorce in Ontario!

Here are 10 key ways to prepare for your separation or divorce as effectively as possible:

1.    Assess Your Emotional State of Mind

Getting separated or divorced is most likely one of the most difficult emotional situations you will ever face in your life.

You will definitely have to deal with some difficult emotions, frustration, anxiety, and even depression. 

You need to set up a support network of friends and family members for moral support and emotional support during this tough time.

You might even consider some personal counselling to help you deal with your separation or divorce.  A good personal counsellor can give you some important coping tools to help you handle this big change in your life.

A good personal counsellor can be so helpful to your situation.   Give some careful thought to getting the help of a personal counsellor.

2.  Educate Yourself About The Separation and Divorce Process

You should get an overview of the separation and divorce process in Ontario.  That will help you work effectively with your family lawyer.

You need to clearly understand your family law rights in the main areas of most separations and divorces: child custody and access, now called decision-making responsibility and parenting time, child support, spousal support and the property issues.

Get the advice of an experienced family lawyer so that you clearly understand how Ontario family law applies to the various aspects of your situation.  It’s money well spent!

3.  Get Organized and Collect Your Documents

You need to start gathering together key financial documents in your separation or divorce.

You need to collect your recent Notices of Assessment, a recent paystub, and documents showing the value of your assets and the amounts of your debts.

Your family lawyer can help you determine your date of separation.  That date is really important for dealing with the property issues in your case.  You need to show the value of your assets and the amounts of your debts on the date of separation.

The more you organize your financial information and documents for your family lawyer, the less money you have to spend to have your lawyer prepare and organize these materials.
