5 Reasons Why All Spouses Must Have A Prenuptial Agreement Before They Get Married in Ontario!

If you’re serious about protecting your financial future, you need to get a prenuptial agreement before you get married.

A separation or divorce can easily cause you serious financial problems if you don’t have a prenuptial agreement.

Hi, my name is Thomas O’Malley.  I’m an experienced family lawyer in Durham Region and the GTA.

Here’s 5 great reasons to get a prenuptial agreement in Ontario:

1.   More than 30% of all marriages end in divorce!

You don’t need to be a pessimist about romance and marriage to still realize that you need to plan for the future.

Here’s a fact for you:  You can go into your marriage with the best intention and still find yourself getting separated or divorced for a number of reasons.

You need to be prepared just in case your marriage or common-law relationship does end.

Better be safe than sorry!

2.   Family Court or Divorce Proceedings Can Take A Long Time!

If you don’t have a prenuptial agreement, you can easily spend months negotiating a separation agreement with your former spouse.

It gets worse if you have to go to family court.  Family court is generally much longer than trying to negotiate a separation agreement with your ex-spouse.

In contrast, when you have a prenuptial agreement, you have your family law issues settled easily and quickly.

3.  You Must Protect Your Financial Future!

When you have a prenuptial agreement, you can make sure you protect the financial assets you bring into your marriage or common-law relationship.

A prenuptial agreement can make a difference between night and day in securing your financial future if your marriage or common-law relationship ends.

4.   A Prenuptial Agreement Helps Reduce the Tension and Anxiety of A Separation or Divorce

You’ll usually face some serious anxiety and frustration when you get separated or divorced.

You can dramatically reduce this tension and anxiety when you have the financial issues already settled in a fair and reasonable prenuptial agreement.

5.    It’s Simply A Smart Decision

You need to be business-like in your financial affairs as much as possible.  This applies to your marriage or common-law relationship as well.

You need stability both during your marriage and after your separation or divorce if that happens.  You can give yourself that stability and peace of mind with a prenuptial agreement.
