7 Things To Consider Before Your Start Your Separation or Divorce-Part Two

If you want to know how your separation or divorce will most like go, just consider whether you are doing enough planning, if any, for your separation or divorce..

As I mentioned in another video, you will certainly face some problems in your separation or divorce.  That’s inevitable.

However, you can certainly reduce the number of problems and obstacles in your separation or divorce with some careful planning.

Hi, my name is Thomas O’Malley.  I’m an experienced family lawyer in Durham Region and the GTA.

Here are some more key strategies you should start using before you actually initiate or begin the separation or divorce process:

1.  Carefully Consider Your Financial Situation

You must really sit down and assess your financial situation.  If you have to move to another residence, can you pay the rent or mortgage?

Do you have start considering some job training to re-enter the workforce?

Plus, this one thing most people always forget:  your separation or divorce always costs more money than you think.

If your kids will be living with you most of the time, will you get child support from the other parent?

You must review your financial situation in detailed with your family lawyer so that they can advise you on the best way to forward in your separation or divorce.

2.  Where Are You Going to Live?

This is a big decision.

You have to face a few months usually until you have a final agreement or settlement in your separation or divorce.  Where will you live during this period of time?

Many people continue to live in the family home until there is a final settlement.

That makes sense as long as you and your spouse can act in a reasonable and civil manner with each other.

You also have to consider the best situation for your children.  In many situations, your kids will do better when they continue to attend the same school, at least, until the school year ends.

3.         Set Reasonable Goals

Your success in your separation or divorce really does depend on setting reasonable goals.

You probably have a general idea about what you want to achieve in your separation or divorce.

However, you must test the reasonableness of your goals by taking into account the advice of an experienced family lawyer.  Your family lawyer can tell you what makes sense in your particular case based on their knowledge and experience.

There’s no use spending thousands of dollars and wasting your time and energy on goals that you are not likely to achieve in your family law case.

4.         Take Care of Yourself

You must make sure you take care of your mental well-being during this difficult time in your life.

Make sure you have a support network of friends and family members set up who can help cope with your difficult situation.

Consider individual counselling to help with the anxiety and frustration of your separation or divorce.

Regular exercise, such as walking, can help your physical and mental well-being.
