Discover Even More Essential Advice on How To Tell Your Children About Your Separation or Divorce in Ontario!

What parent wouldn’t dread the idea of telling your children that you are getting separated or divorced?

However, you can certainly reduce the tension and anxiety of telling your kids you’re getting separated with a few simple approaches.

Here are some important ways that can really help to tell your children about your separation or divorce successfully.

 1.  When You Tell Your Children You’re Getting Separated is Really Important!

You must specifically plan when to tell your children that you are getting separated or divorced.

Do not tell your children you are getting separated or divorced near or on holidays or birthdays.  These are special times for your children.  Don’t upset them on these special days.  They will never forget it.

Have your conversation with your children at home.  Don’t discuss this important news in a public place, such as a restaurant.

2.  What to Tell Your Children About Your Separation

It is important to stress that your children in no way caused your separation and they are not responsible for problems between their parents. 

Tell your children very directly that you have made a careful, adult decision to separate and unlikely to change your minds.

Assure your children that they will always remain free to love both parents.  No pressure will be brought on them to reject one parent in order to get along with the other parent.

Encourage your children to ask questions not just at the beginning but throughout the long process of adjusting to a separation.  Allow them to express their feelings.  Let them know you are listening by repeating back to them in your own words the concerns they express to you.

Describe any changes the children can expect to their day-to-day lives.  Let them know where they will live, whether they’ll continue at the same school, and how much time they will spend with each parent.  You should have this mapped out in your parenting plan.

Stress that you and your spouse will continue to love and care for your children. 

It will never be easy to tell your kids you are getting separated or divorced.  However, when you use these important strategies, you can really reduce their anxiety and worries about the situation.

Make sure your children continue to go to the same school if you can.  This provides stability in their lives.
