How To Deal With Your Separation or Divorce in Ontario At Work!

How To Deal With Your Separation or Divorce in Ontario At Work!

Do you know how to handle your separation or divorce at work?

You probably initially want to hide this fact from your boss and your co-workers!

That’s not necessarily the best thing to do.

Hi, my name is Thomas O’Malley.  I’m an experienced family lawyer in Durham Region and the GTA.

Your boss and co-workers probably already sense that something serious is going on in your life since you are not acting like your usual self at work.

You should seriously consider telling your boss about your separation and divorce.  When your boss realizes what’s happening in your life, they will probably give you some flexibility in dealing with this difficult time in your life.

You will need your boss’ co-operation for taking important time off to see your lawyer, go to court hearings and other essential meetings.

If you do decide to tell your co-workers about your situation, make sure you tell your boss first.

Don’t make any sudden decisions about leaving your job since you are dealing with a difficult separation or divorce.

Ontario family court could easily impute income to you if you leave your job.  That means that the court would say that you could be earning a specific amount of money a year even though you are not actually doing that.

The court would use this imputed income in determining the child support and spousal support issues in your case.

Your employer is probably flexible in helping you take off the necessary time to deal with your separation or divorce.  Employers are much flexible these days than in previous years.

You should also make it a priority to take care of yourself so that you can deal effectively with your separation or divorce and continue to do your job well.

Exercise and eating properly can help you deal with this difficult time in your life.

You should also consider personal counselling to deal with the frustrating and difficult emotional side of getting separated or divorced.

Make sure you also have a solid support network of family members and friends.
