How to Introduce Your New Partner to Your Children in Your Separation or Divorce in Ontario!

How to Introduce Your New Partner to Your Children in Your Separation or Divorce in Ontario!

How would you like to introduce your new partner to your children smoothly and easily?

Who wouldn’t when they are going through a difficult separation or divorce?

Hi, my name is Thomas O’Malley.  I’m an experienced family lawyer in Durham Region and the GTA.

In truth, this can be one of the most difficult aspects of your new life after your separation or divorce is finalized.

The most important approach to take is that you should wait, at least, six months before you introduce your new partner to your children.

You want to make sure you are in a solid and committed relationship before you have children meet your new partner.  Your children are already dealing with enough stress and anxiety as a result of your separation or divorce from the other parent, your former spouse.

It does not make any sense to start introducing people who you are dating to your children until you really know that you are or will be in a committed relationship with this new person.

Your children need to come first.  You will give them that stability and reassurance that they want in their life by only introducing them to new partner when you have been dating a person for six months or more and you know are or will be in a committed relationship with this person.

Next you need to prepare your children to meet your new partner.  Take it very slowly.  Tell your children that you are dating a special person and you would like to introduce this person to them.

You should as a matter of courtesy tell your former partner, the other parent, that you will be introducing your new partner to your children.

When you actually introduce your new partner to your children, make it a brief visit outside your home.

Give your children a lot of reassurance that your new partner is not replacing the other parent in any way at all.   Make sure they understand that both you and their other parent will always be there for the children.

Make sure you give some careful thought to how and when you introduce your new partner to your children.

You want to help your children deal with your separation or divorce as successfully and easily as possible.

You will certainly help with that goal by taking the time to introduce your new partner to the children carefully and slowly.
