How To Survive Your Separation or Divorce in Ontario!

Let’s talk about what you need to do now to survive your separation or divorce.

You can actually reduce your anxiety and frustration in your separation or divorce by taking certain actions now to smooth the way to settling your legal issues and moving on with your life.

Hi, my name is Thomas O’Malley.  I’m an experienced family lawyer in Durham Region and the GTA.

You must protect your financial situation as you start to move forward in your separation or divorce.

First, you get a solid grasp on your financial situation and your spouse’s financial situation.  Where is all the money going?  What debts are there?  What assets do you and your spouse have?

Definitely make sure you have your own bank account and at least one credit card in your name alone.

When you have decided to separate from your spouse and they have told you they want to end the relationship or marriage, close all joint credit cards and don’t put any money in joint bank accounts if you absolutely don’t have to do that.  You have to be careful about the joint bank accounts since important expenses, such as the monthly mortgage payment on your home are often paid from the joint bank accounts.

At a minimum, don’t put any more money in a joint bank account than you have to do to make sure these important regular expenses are paid.

Next talk to an experienced family lawyer and find out whether you should first attempt to negotiate a separation agreement with your spouse or go to family court.  This is a really important decision that an experienced family lawyer can help you answer.

Try to avoid dating or getting into a new relationship when you getting separated or divorced.  You need to stay focused and grounded as much as possible during this difficult time in your life.

Watch your finances very carefully during your separation or divorce.  You must not overspend since you just don’t what you will need to purchase or fund during your separation.

This is really important:  avoid social media posts about separation or divorce.  Your spouse could use these posts against you.  Don’t take that risk.  It’s not worth it.
