The Truth About Getting Separated or Divorced in Ontario That No One Tells You! Part Three

If you’re serious about getting separated or divorced successfully, you must know these truths about separation and divorce in Ontario to make your life a little easier.

Here are some more critical facts you need to know about your separation or divorce in Ontario:

5.   If you truly want to protect your children during your separation or divorce, you have to make a serious effort to get along with your former spouse.

I know it’s hard to think about getting along with your former spouse in your separation or divorce.  That’s only natural!

However, your children truly do suffer when you and your former have serious conflict during your separation and after the final settlement is signed. 

You must work out ways to get along with your former spouse to minimize any problems that your children are facing during this difficult time for every family member, especially your children.

You and your former spouse must have a solid parenting plan so that your children do well in school and their daily lives.

Let your children see and know that you and your former spouse get along so that you make the best decisions for your children. 

You and your former spouse must look beyond your needs and see that your children come first in handling your separation or divorce.

6.  You don’t usually get the chance to prove your former spouse is a liar.

Many spouses are totally focussed on showing that their former spouse is a liar and a “no-good” person.

However, this is not a matter for the legal side of separation and divorce.

When you are negotiating a separation agreement outside family court or trying to resolve your legal issues in family court, you must stay focused on the important family law issues in your situation.

Proving that your former spouse is a liar just for the sake showing that they are liar is a waste of time.  This does not help resolve the family law issues in your case.

Usually, when a spouse is focussed on showing that their spouse is a liar, they are dealing with some tough emotional issues in their separation or divorce.  Many spouses do have to deal with difficult emotional issues and trauma resulting from their separation or divorce.  That’s very common.

In this situation, a spouse really needs to get some excellent personal counselling to help them deal with these difficult issues in their life.  These types of issues do not get resolved in dealing with the legal issues in your separation or divorce. 

Focus on the advice of your family lawyer about the key issues in your separation or divorce and how to resolve them.
