How To Avoid A Social Media Disaster in Your Separation or Divorce in Ontario!

How To Avoid A Social Media Disaster in Your Separation or Divorce in Ontario!

Can the wrong social media posts really cause problems for your separation or divorce?

Absolutely, they can!

There’s no doubt that inappropriate social media posts can really derail your separation or divorce, causing problems you didn’t even think about in the first place!

Hi, my name is Thomas O’Malley.  I’m an experienced family lawyer in Durham Region and the GTA.

Here’s some key ways to avoid social media problems that can easily damage your separation or divorce:

1.  Stay Off Social Media Platforms As Much As Possible!

You must stay off social media platforms as much as possible during your separation or divorce.

Your former spouse or their lawyer cannot dig up ammunition and bad material on you that you should have never posted on social media in the first place.

It might not be possible to completely stay off social media.  However, you can certainly reduce how much time you spend on social media and what you post there.

2.  Don’t Post Anything that Shows Bad Parenting Behavior!

People have become addicted to social media so that they are always taking photos left, right and center.

You simply don’t any photos posted by anyone on social media that shows you intoxicated, using drugs or anything else that amounts to bad parent behavior.

You have to avoid situations in which a person could take a compromising photo of you that is posted on social media and then used against you in your separation or divorce.

In short, don’t take any photos that you show in a bad light in any manner and make sure you don’t get into any situation in which another person can take a photo of you that comes off negatively!

It’s funny how these photos always seem to end up plastered everywhere on Facebook and Instagram!

3.  Don’t Post Any Rants on Social Media

When you post rants on social media, it does not look good at all.  It’s simply not the place to vent.

Make sure you have a social support network that you can rely upon to vent and discuss the tough time you are having in your separation or divorce.

You might even consider getting personal counselling when you are having a difficult time with your separation or divorce.  This is completely normal and understandable when you are going through such a life-changing situation.

Don’t even text or email your frustrations.  Save them for real live conversations with good friends and family members.  There is no record of these conversations!
