Who Else Wants To Know How To Protect Their Finances After Their Separation or Divorce is Over?

Who Else Wants To Protect Their Finances After Your Separation or Divorce is Over?

There is no doubt about it: Dealing with your finances after your separation or divorce is settled is usually more difficult than you realize!

Your financial troubles are not necessarily over simply because you signed a separation agreement or family law settlement with your ex-spouse.

Hi, my name is Thomas O’Malley.  I’m an experienced family lawyer in Durham Region and the GTA.

You need to take some practical action to make sure you protect and improve your financial situation after your separation or divorce is over.

Here are some really critical things you need to do to protect your financial future after your separation or divorce is over:

1.  Cancel any joint credit cards that you still have with your ex-spouse.  Then make sure you establish credit in your own name.

2.  Make a will or change your will so that your ex-spouse does not inherit any of your assets.

3.  Change beneficiary designations on your insurance policies, pensions, and anywhere else you may have listed your ex-spouse.

4.   Split retirement plans according to the terms of your separation agreement or divorce settlement agreement.

5. Take measures to ensure you get your child support and/or spousal support.

6.  Sell or refinance the marital home.  If your agreement is for it to be sold and the net proceeds divided between you, then you need to get that done.  If you are keeping the home, refinance the mortgage in your name alone.

7.  Create a plan with timelines to ensure that everything that needs to be done to protect your finances after your separation or divorce gets done!

Make sure you spend some time with your family lawyer discussing these important issues in your separation or divorce.
