How to Avoid Some Really Big Mistakes in Your Family Law Case in Ontario!

Here’s some more big mistakes you need to avoid for a successful separation or divorce in Ontario:

5.   Going through your separation or divorce without a support network!

You will face a tough time in your separation or divorce.  You need the support of your friends and family members. 

You need to set up a support network of friends and family members who can give you moral and emotional support when you really need it. 

It’s such a burden to carry all the problems and anxieties of your separation or divorce without the ability to speak to other people about it.

You might even consider personal counselling if you are having a really difficult time with your separation or divorce. 

A good personal counsellor can put on the right track to make it through your separation or divorce in one piece. 

6.  Using your children to get back at your former spouse!

I know you probably feel bitter and resentful towards your former spouse.  That’s completely understandable when you’re getting separated or divorced.

However, you must not use your children as a way to get back at your ex-spouse.  You must keep your children insulated from the difficulties you are having with your former spouse as much as possible.

For example, don’t use your children to spy on your spouse’s activities or deliver messages to your spouse for you.

Your children deserve stability in their lives.  You and your former spouse must do your best to provide stability to your children.

7.   You don’t get full financial disclosure from your former spouse!

Some of the most important issues in your separation or divorce are the financial or money issues.

You can only properly deal with these financial issues by getting full financial disclosure from your spouse. 

This means that your spouse must provide you with a detailed Financial Statement that sets out their assets and debts.   Your spouse must provide supporting documentation that shows the value of these assets and the amounts of these debts.

Your spouse must also provide their last three years’ Notices of Assessment and a recent paystub showing your-to-date income.

You need this information to deal with the important issues of child support, spousal support and the property issues in your case.

You must also provide full financial disclosure to your former spouse.
