How To Get The Right Parenting Time Schedule For Your Children in Ontario!

How To Get The Right Parenting Time Schedule For Your Children in Ontario!

I assume you want a close relationship with your children.  What parent doesn’t want that?

A really important way to make sure you get and keep a close relationship with your children is to have a fair and reasonable visitation or parenting time schedule for your children.

I will discuss this really important issue in this video.

Hi, my name is Thomas O’Malley.  I’m an experienced family lawyer in Durham Region and the GTA.

The best way to approach creating an effective parenting time schedule is to negotiate a parenting time schedule as part of a written separation agreement or court settlement with your former spouse.

The parenting time schedule really does depend on the age of your child, your work schedule and your spouse’s work schedule.

When your child is a year old or younger, in many cases your child will live with one parent most of the time.   The other parent should have frequent access to the child to ensure that this parent bonds well with their child.   These visits are usually just a few hours long.

However, overnight parenting time usually does not start until the child is one year old or older.

When your child is a toddler between a 1 ½ years old and 3 years old, you can certainly start increasing the parenting time for the parent who was not the original primary caregiver for the child.

This parent can certainly start having overnight parenting time with the child.

You might even consider starting a week-about parenting time schedule. This is increasingly becoming quite common in many separation and divorce cases.

The key is that both parents must live in the same city or relatively close to each other, such as within 20 or 30 miles of each other.

When your children are between 4 and 12 years of age, you can easily establish a parenting time schedule that maximize each parent’s time with the children.  You just have to make sure that you can get your children to their sports activities and other extracurricular activities.

When your children are teenagers, you establish a parenting schedule that definitely fits with your teenager’s schedule and activities.

By establishing a well thought-out parenting time schedule, your children will enjoy much more stability in their lives, especially after dealing with the separation of their parents.
