What’s The Smart Way To Know When To Get Separated or Divorced?

Let’s face it.  There’s never a perfect time to get separated or divorced.

You have to give this life-changing decision some serious thought before you actually decide to separate from your spouse.

Here are some key questions to ask yourself to help to know whether you should get separated or divorced:

 1. Is your spouse having an affair? 

If your spouse is having an affair, obviously you might want to end your relationship or marriage.  However, you should consider getting marriage counselling. 

More relationships and marriages have survived an affair than you realize.  No one said it would be easy.  Of course, your spouse has to actually end the affair.  That goes without saying.

2.  Is your relationship abusive or toxic?

If your spouse is physically abusive, you need to get out of that relationship or marriage as soon as possible for your safety and well-being and the safety and well-being of your kids.

You should consider leaving any situation in which you and your child face mental and emotional abuse.  Your spouse would have to undergo some serious counselling for this situation to change.  If you see no potential change in your spouse quickly, you should leave that relationship or marriage.

3. Do you really know your marriage or relationship is over?

Sometimes, you know your relationship or marriage is over.  You have been pretending that the relationship is fine when you know deep in your heart that it’s over.

In that case, do some careful planning to end your relationship and move on with your life.

4.  Have you done your planning?

You must do some careful planning before you get separated or divorced. 

Have you carefully assessed your financial situation?  Where will you and your kids live after you have separated from your spouse?  How will you and your spouse make decisions about your kids?

Careful planning is one of the keys to a successful separation or divorce!

5.  Will you get financial support from your spouse?

You could be entitled to child support and spousal support depending on the facts of your case.

You need to carefully consider whether you will actually get this money on a regular basis from your former spouse when you are separated or divorced.

If your spouse has a solid-paying job, then you probably will get this money on a regular basis.
