A Better Way To Survive Your Separation or Divorce in Ontario!
No matter who you are, you probably face an uphill battle in your separation or divorce.
However, you can certainly make the separation and divorce process in Ontario much easier for yourself by following some essential family law advice and strategies that more spouses need to know and follow.
Hi, my name is Thomas O’Malley. I’m an experienced family lawyer in Durham Region and the GTA.
7. Don’t Listen to Your Friends and Family Members About Family Law Advice
You definitely want to have a support network of friends and family members who will support you during your separation or divorce.
However, do not rely on them for family law advice. They are certainly well-meaning and they want to do the right thing for you. However, they are not experienced family lawyers.
In fact, friends and family members can often tell you to pursue a certain goal that just does not make sense in your particular case. This can cost you months of frustration, anxiety and money.
In short, rely on your friends and family members for emotional support during your separation or divorce. However, do not rely on them for family law advice!
8. Focus on Settling Your Family Law Issues From the Start.
When you understand your family law rights and have the advice of an experienced family lawyer on the issues in your case, you need to focus on settling your family law issues.
You should try to negotiate a separation agreement with your former spouse if they are reasonable on the legal issues in your family law case. Your family lawyer will draft a solid separation agreement for you that protects your family law rights.
When you are in the family court process, you should also make a specific proposal to settle the outstanding issues in your case. Most cases in family court settle before a trial is held.
You can achieve peace of mind and move on with your life much more quickly when you actively are working on settling or resolving your family law issues with your former spouse.
9. Don’t Rush to Make Critical Decisions in Your Separation or Divorce
You need to carefully consider any key decisions about the legal issues in your separation or divorce.
Don’t let anyone, especially your former spouse, pressure or bully you into making really important decisions in your family law case.
Now don’t misunderstand me. I am not saying that it takes months and months to make important decisions. However, you should have time or take time over a few weeks to consider your decisions about important legal issues in your separation or divorce.
Don’t get caught up in any drama with your former spouse. Try to stay cool-headed and businesslike in your approach to making important decisions in your separation or divorce.
Make sure you spend some time with your family lawyer discussing these important issues in your separation or divorce.
