Although dealing with your ex-spouse’s anger is no easy task, you can definitely take certain actions that will it make it easier to deal with this tough situation.
First, be willing to listen to your spouse’s concerns and frustrations. When you show empathy or compassion for your spouse, this can really help defuse their anger.
However, don’t be afraid to take a “time-out” when you are having discussions with your former spouse. Put definite limits on what you’ll take and how you’ll be treated.
Do your best not to take your former spouse’s comments too personally. Understand that that is their perception of what’s happening. It’s not your understanding of what’s going on.
Stay calm as much as possible. This will help to bring down the temperature in the room. By staying calm, you are much more likely to get your former spouse to calm down and not be act as angry.
When you are dealing with a really difficult ex-spouse, you need to put limits on your interaction with them. You can do that by only communicating with them by email or text message. Always be respectful and only make positive comments. Don’t be drawn into any of their nasty and unpleasant messages and comments.
You must always put your personal safety and the safety of your children first when you are dealing with a potentially dangerous spouse. Remove yourself and your children from any potentially dangerous or harmful situation.
When you use these important steps, you can more effectively handle your former spouse’s anger in your separation or divorce.
