Here’s some important tips for a healthy separation or divorce:
1. Make sure you really want a separation or divorce
Obviously, any decision to get separated or divorced is a really big decision. Make sure you take some time to make this decision.
First, you should consider getting marriage or relationship counselling. Often, solid relationship counselling can help you put your relationship back on the right track for you and your spouse.
2. Get solid family law advice
You need to have a detailed meeting with an experienced Ontario family lawyer so that you know and understand your family law rights.
You need to make sure you understand your legal rights in these key areas: child custody and access, now called decision-making responsibility and parenting time, child support, spousal support, and the property issues.
3. Change Your Passwords
You need to change your passwords for your computer, your important online sites and your phone.
You don’t want your spouse having access to this vital information now.
4. Gather Important Documents and Records
After your meeting with your family lawyer, you should start collecting or gathering these important documents:
- Your last three years’ Notices of Assessment
- Bank account statements
- RRSP statements
- Any real estate appraisals
- Mortgage statements
- Line of credit statements
- Credit card statements
When you are married, you need to have statements showing the value of your assets and the amounts of your debts on the date of separation. Your lawyer can help you with this process.
5. Treat your spouse with respect
If you want an easier separation or divorce, do you best to get along with your former spouse. Always treat them with respect and dignity.
Obviously, don’t let your spouse walk all over you like a door mat. However, try to understand their side. When you understand your former spouse’s point of view on the issues in your separation or your divorce, this goes a long way to settling your family law issues.
I will give you some tips on a healthy separation and divorce in the next video.
