Who Else Wants to Know How To Avoid These 3 Serious Pitfalls in Your Separation or Divorce?
One thing is for sure: you can make your separation and divorce go much easier when you avoid certain pitfalls along the way!
Hi, my name is Thomas O’Malley. I’m an experienced family lawyer in Durham Region and the GTA.
Here are some important pitfalls you must avoid in your separation or divorce:
1. Do not let your emotions decide what you do in your separation or divorce!
As I have mentioned in several videos, you can’t make important decisions in planning your separation or divorce when you are super stressed out.
Try to take some quiet time where and when you can to plan out your separation or divorce when you are initiating the end of your marriage or relationship.
When your spouse suddenly announces that they have decided to end the relationship or marriage, you must also take some important time to regroup and plan your next steps.
Keeping calm and focussed is even more important during your separation or divorce when you are trying to settle your family law issues with your former spouse.
2. Allowing your friends and loved ones to make decisions for you
You definitely want to have a support network to help you survive this difficult time in your life.
However, you don’t let your friends and family members get carried way in influencing your decisions about the various aspects of your separation or divorce.
Your friends and family law members are not family lawyers. Often, they can give you advice that will hurt your chances in family court or make it much more difficult to negotiate a separation agreement with your former spouse.
3. Failing to get the advice of an experienced Ontario family lawyer
You don’t really understand your family law rights unless you get the advice of an experienced Ontario family lawyer.
Sure, you can read a lot of stuff online and get information from your friends and family members.
Here’s the problem: partially accurate advice and information can really hurt the outcome of your separation or divorce.
You can easily end up with a really bad court settlement or separation agreement without the solid advice of an experienced family lawyer.
I will discuss other dangerous pitfalls in your separation or divorce in another video.
